The Message That Arrived on Foot

In the Cloudrest telling, the wind took every bridge but one.

The remaining bridge could be seen from the observatory window: a pale line vanishing into fog. Its far end had disappeared. Its near end was still tied down, and this encouraged an optimism the bridge itself did nothing to support.

Plumeet was given a message.

Across the gap, a lamp was burning. Someone there needed to know that the crossing was closed.

The note was folded into a tube. The tube was light. The duty was exact. Those were normally reassuring things.

Plumeet reached the outer ledge and stopped.

The wind rose under the head-wings, then dropped. For a moment the ledge seemed to move sideways. Plumeet drew back into shelter, tiny hands closed hard around the message.

The lamp across the gap went out.

Here the grander versions supply a flight through the storm. They give Plumeet the courage to command the wind and wings broad enough to cover the towers.

The older-shaped story gives the courier a stair.

It descended inside the observatory. Below it lay another stair, and below that a narrow way along the foundations. Plumeet walked.

The message knocked against the tube with each step. Above, the wind tore at the remaining bridge. Twice Plumeet found a passage blocked and had to return. Once there was nowhere sheltered to rest except behind a fallen sign pointing upwards.

By the time the courier reached the opposite tower, the fog was thinning.

The door opened. A traveller stood inside with a bag packed for departure. The extinguished lamp was on the table; there was no oil left.

Plumeet delivered the warning.

Through the window they could see the bridge twisting loose at its far end.

In the version told to impress visiting officials, the delivery is entered as an exceptional aerial service. In the version worth keeping, Plumeet is too tired to object.

The traveller puts the bag down and brings water.

Nothing crosses the gap that morning.

For a while, the little courier cannot stop watching the place where the bridge had been. Then the hands loosen, and the empty message tube rolls gently against the cup.
